Rebuilding a Neglected Nonprofit's Systems After a Server Compromise
DIRC engagement. Delivered pro bono by Do IT Right Consultants LLC.
Overview
An animal rehabilitation nonprofit had run for years without anyone looking after its systems. Day-to-day operations depended on a Microsoft Access database that was badly out of date, and its on-premises server had been compromised and was serving malicious software.
The challenge
The organization couldn't keep operating on a compromised server, and the aging Access system was becoming a problem in its own right. There was no budget for a large project, and the organization was already paying for Microsoft 365 services it wasn't using.
The approach
- A new operations system on an open-source business operating system, replacing the outdated Access database
- A Power BI dashboard that gives the organization a view of the business
- Files and workloads moved onto the Microsoft 365 services the organization already paid for
- The compromised server retired
- Microsoft nonprofit pricing set up for the organization
The outcome
- No compromised server, and no need to keep a server at all
- Operations off an outdated Access database and onto a maintained platform
- A business dashboard in Power BI
- Full use of the Microsoft 365 subscription it already had, at nonprofit pricing
